1. Introduction to the lion – the king of the jungle
1.1. Characteristics of the king of the forest
Lion (scientific name is Panthera leo) is one of the “big cats” in the Cat family, a species of the Leopard genus. Lions have been classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List since 1996.
Wild lions currently live mainly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia (residing in Gir Forest National Park in India).

Lions often live in savannas and steppes. They have different social behavior compared to other cats. A pride of lions usually has females and their young, along with a small number of adult lions. Groups of female lions will often hunt together. Their prey is mainly large ungulates.
Lions usually have a lifespan of about 10 – 14 years in the wild. In protected areas, they can live more than 20 years. In the wild, male lions rarely live more than 10 years. That is due to the fact that male lions constantly have to participate in fights with opponents to gain territory and protect the pride…

1.2. Discover 8 interesting facts about lions
Below are 8 interesting things about lion life and behavior:
Like other animals of the Cat family, grassland kings spend 2-3 hours a day hunting, 1 hour to eat and the remaining 20 hours just to sleep;
Although smaller in size than male lions, in a pride of lions, these “girls” will take on most of the responsibility of hunting for the whole pride. Male lions also have an equally important task: protecting their home from attacks by other “wanderers”;
The lion’s roar echoed far away. You can hear the roar when you are up to… 8km away from them;
Male lions have manes, female lions do not. This is also the clearest recognition point between them. Male lions’ manes help them avoid scratches and bites during fights. The older the lion’s mane becomes, the darker it becomes;
Lions can live without drinking water for 4 days. However, an adult lion will need to eat about 10 – 15kg of meat per day;
Lions have many “natural” physical characteristics that help them become natural hunters in nature. Specifically, lions’ vision is 6 times more sensitive to light than humans, giving them a remarkable advantage when hunting at night. Besides, they are capable of reaching speeds of up to 80km/h in a very short time, jumping up to more than 10m high;
After tigers, lions are the second largest cat species in the world. Male lions weigh on average about 180kg, while female lions weigh on average about 130kg. The heaviest lion recorded weighed up to 375kg;
In addition to roaring, lions also communicate with each other in many ways: through groaning, murmuring, rubbing their heads together to spread “family scent”. This scent allows lions to recognize members of the pride whenever there is a dispute with an opponent.

After many years of operation, Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc Wildlife Care and Conservation Park has continuously welcomed future generations of lions. The parents have adapted well to the living environment at this Vietnamese zoo to naturally pair up and give birth to “citizens” who are granted original “birth certificates” at Vinpearl Safari.
Right from birth, lion cubs at Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc are cared for using the breeding method under strict conditions. Specifically, every day there are always 2 “foster parents” on duty 24/7 to care for and breastfeed the lion cubs every 2 hours with specialized milk for cats.
